Mean shift based gradient vector flow for image segmentation

چکیده
In recent years, gradient vector flow (GVF) based algorithms have been successfully used to segment a variety of 2-D and 3-D imagery. However, due to the compromise of internal and external energy forces within the resulting partial differential equations, these methods may lead to biased segmentation results. In this paper, we propose MSGVF, a mean shift based GVF segmentation algorithm that can successfully locate the correct borders. MSGVF is developed so that when the contour reaches equilibrium, the various forces resulting from the different energy terms are balanced. In addition, the smoothness constraint of image pixels is kept so that overor under-segmentation can be reduced. Experimental results on publicly accessible datasets of dermoscopic and optic disc images demonstrate that the proposed method effectively detects the borders of the objects of interest.

Mean Shifting Gradient Vector Flow: An Improved External Force Field for Active Surfaces in Widefield Microscopy
Gradient vector flow based snakes are a very common method in biomedical image segmentation. The use of gradient vector flow herein brings some major advantages like a large capture range to strong gradients and a good adaption of the snakes in concave regions. In some cases though, the application of gradient vector flow can also have undesired effects, e.g. if only parts of an image are stron...
متن کاملGraph Cutting Tumor Images
A new proposed method of fully automatic processing frameworks is based on graph-cut active contour algorithms. This paper addresses the problem of segmenting a liver and tumor regions from the abdominal CT images. A predicate is defined for measuring the evidence for a boundary between two regions using a Graph-based representation of the image. The algorithm is applied to image segmentation u...
متن کاملA New Mean Shift Algorithm Based on Bacterial Colony Chemotaxis
Mean shift is an effective statistical iterative algorithm. Like other gradient ascent optimization methods, it is susceptible to local maxima, and hence often fails to find the desired global maximum. And in the iterative process, size of bandwidth has great impact on the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm. It not only decides the number of sampling points in the iteration, but also affe...
متن کاملA Novel Gradient Vector Flow Snake Model Based on Convex Function for Infrared Image Segmentation
Infrared image segmentation is a challenging topic because infrared images are characterized by high noise, low contrast, and weak edges. Active contour models, especially gradient vector flow, have several advantages in terms of infrared image segmentation. However, the GVF (Gradient Vector Flow) model also has some drawbacks including a dilemma between noise smoothing and weak edge protection...
متن کاملImportance of Mean Shift in Remote Sensing Segmentation
The segmentation of an image can be considered as a preprocessing step for many of the algorithms such as object detection and identification. Many algorithms exist in the field of remote sensing for segmentation, in every case the desirable output of segmentation is a well defined region or features of object which can be distinguished from another. The desirable features include well based ed...
